Your lips, inner cheeks, and gums can suffer from canker sores. These types of sores are extremely annoying but they usually heal by themselves within one to two weeks. Canker sores are not the same as cold sores that tend to develop on the outside of mouth. You could be suffering from an underlying problem if you get canker sores quite frequently.

Since canker sores are not contagious, kissing your partner while having this condition will not infect your partner; cold sores, however can. If a canker sore develops in the exact same place, a sharp point or ridge on one of your teeth could be the culprit. This problem can be easily resolved by your dentist who can take away the sharp edge.

Mouth ulcers, on the other hand are usually an indication of a problem or malfunction within the digestive or gastrointestinal system.

Canker sore treatments should lead to a fast symptomatic relief and quicker healing. They include:

• Application of Vitamin E oil several times a day, onto the sore
• Application of powdered alum, fresh pericarp under pomegranate fruit fee, wet tea bag, or fresh aloe leaf to the ulcer
• Antacid such as Milk of magnesia which can offset the acidic environment, transforming the pH making the bacteria weak and eventually die
• Topical application of creams or antiseptic liquids: 3 percent hydrogen peroxide rinse, baking soda rinse, home salt, benadryl allergy liquid and other over-the-counter mouth rinses
• Prescription medications such as Tagamet (cimetidine), tetracycline (antibiotic), or a steroid mouth rinse such as Dexamethasone for severe canker sores. However, these drugs may induce dependence and have negative side effects.
• Use of silver nitrate to burn and cauterize the surface tissue of the ulcers
• Use of Maalox and Benadryl (1 to 1 mixture). Gargle the mixture around your mouth and then spit out. Do not ingest any topical creams or solutions.

Way to prevent canker sores:

• Eat fresh active and live culture yogurts each day.
• Use antibiotics only when it is really necessary. Avoid processed and instant foods. They harm the friendly probiotics residing in your gastrointestinal system and may cause acid reflux, indigestion, or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) that may result in mouth ulcer.
• Canker sores can be induced by eating pineapple, mongo, lychee, or red dates therefore, they should not be eaten
• Consume foods rich in nutritional supplements and fiber such as kiwi, berries, papaya, seaweed, kelp, corn silk, turnip, broccoli, artichoke, spinach, rhubarb, kale, cabbage, asparagus, wheat grass, oats, onion, and celery.
• Avoid extreme emotional stress and relax
• Herbal Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulas can be used to address the root problems of canker sores
• Canker sores can be further irritated by eating acidic or spicy foods so you need to avoid them
• Canker sores frequently develop after biting the lip or the inside of their cheek accidentally causing lesions and cuts inside the mouth. Therefore, to prevent the occurrence of these sores, chew your food slowly and eat small portions.
• Multiple vitamin supplements such as folic acid, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12 can help prevent the occurrence of canker sores
• Certain dental procedures and wrongly-fitting dentures may also result in canker sores
• Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush your teeth and floss every day. Do not use mouthwashes and toothpastes that contain sodium lauryl sulfate because they can cause canker sores. Use natural toothpaste as much as possible.
• Mouth ulcer can be an early indication of something else wrong in your body. Mouth ulcer that are not caused by underlying health usually occurs three to four times a year and usually lasts a week or less.
